평안북도 선천의 독실한 신앙 가문 출신이었던 이숙녀 권사는 6·25 전쟁이 터지자 남편과 생이별하고 어린 아들들의 손을 잡은 채 피난길에 올랐습니다. 남쪽으로 내려오는 피난 열차와 험난한 피난길, 총탄과 폭격이 빗발치고 당장 먹을 쌀 한 톨 없는 절망적인 상황이었습니다.
굶주림과 추위 속에서 아이들을 품에 안은 어머니의 기도는 "하나님, 우리 아이들 굶어 죽지 않게 밥 좀 주십시오."가 아니었습니다. 이 권사는 어린 아들들의 머리에 손을 얹고 이렇게 눈물로 서원했습니다.
"하나님 아버지, 목숨만 살려 주신다면 이 아이들을 다 하나님의 종으로 바치겠습니다. 하나님의 거룩한 도구로만 써 주옵소서."
한국 감리교의 세 거목으로 불렸던 김선도, 김홍도, 김국도 목사님의 뒤에는 피난길의 굶주림 속에서도 자녀들의 머리에 손을 얹고 "하나님, 이 아이들을 주의 종으로 바칩니다"라고 울부짖었던 어머니 이숙녀 권사님이 있었습니다. 빳빳하게 다린 지폐로 십일조를 구별하고, 평생을 자녀들의 강단을 위해 무릎 꿇었던 그 어머니의 기도가 세 아들을 통해 수십만 영혼을 살리는 열매를 맺었습니다.

Deaconess Lee Suk-nyeo came from a devout Christian family in Seoncheon, North Pyeongan Province. When the Korean War broke out, she was separated from her husband and fled south, holding the hands of her young sons. The refugee train and the journey that followed took them through gunfire and bombings. They had no rice to eat.
Hungry and cold, she held her children close. Yet her prayer was more than a plea for food. Placing her hands on her sons’ heads, she made a tearful vow:
“Heavenly Father, if You spare their lives, I will dedicate them all to You. Please use them as Your holy instruments.”
Those sons grew up to become Pastors Kim Sun-do, Kim Hong-do, and Kim Guk-do, remembered as three towering figures in Korean Methodism. Behind their ministries stood a mother who, even on the desperate road to safety, had entrusted her children to God. She carefully set aside her tithe in freshly pressed bills and spent her life on her knees, praying for her sons and their ministries.
Through her three sons, her prayers bore fruit in the lives of countless people.
