부자들 중에는 지하에 수십 층에 달하는 대피소를 만들어 놓은 이들도 있다고 합니다. 식량과 물은 물론이고 심지어 농사까지 지을 수도 있다고 합니다.

요즘 첨단 기업들과 그들이 일구어 내는 부는 거기에 참여하지 못한 이들과의 간격을 극단으로 벌리고 있습니다. 오늘날 우리가 보는 빈부 간의 사회 경제적 격차는 로마 시대와 비슷한 것 같습니다.

그래서 로마 시대를 살았던 그리스도인들이 더욱 그립습니다. 버려진 이들을 돌보는 이는 오직 그리스도인들 밖에 없었던 시대, 그러나 그들이 가진 자원은 고갈되지 않았고, 그들의 비전은 오히려 사회를 뒤바꿨으니, 기독교는 결국 로마의 국교가 되었습니다.

폭력과 갈등, 재난으로 어두운 이 시대는 바로 우리가 빛으로, 소금으로 살아가야 할 시간입니다. 우리도 가져야 하고, 우리도 생존해야 합니다. 하지만 우리는 생존에 급급한 겁쟁이들로 남을 수 없습니다.

오늘 나의 삶의 자리에서 빛이 됩니다.

Nowadays, advanced technologies and the wealth they generate are widening the gap between those who can participate and those who cannot to an extreme degree.

The socioeconomic divide we see today increasingly resembles that of the Roman era. That is why the Christians of the Roman world feel so close to us now.

In a time when abandoned and suffering people were cared for by no one else, Christians stepped forward. Their resources did not run dry, and their vision did not shrink. Instead, their faithful love transformed society—so much so that Christianity eventually became the faith of the empire.

In an age darkened by violence, conflict, and disaster, this is precisely the time for us to live as light and salt.

Yes, we must provide for ourselves, and yes, we must survive. But we cannot remain fearful people obsessed only with survival.

Today, in the very place where I live and stand, I choose to be light.
