십자가의 사건 The cross

삶이 고단하고 힘들 때, 모든 것들이 지긋지긋하고 벗어나고 싶을 때, 마음이 우울하고 답답할 때가 있습니다. 그 때마다 삶의 밭을 갈아엎는다면 그 밭에는 아무 것도 자랄 수 없겠지요.
삶에 도전이 생길 때마다 십자가를 생각합니다. 무거운 십자가, 그 길 시작부터 끝까지 이어지는 고통, 자신의 몸조차 가누기 힘든데 그걸 들어 날라야 하니 우리 주님, 얼마나 힘드셨을까요! 하지만 그 분이 십자가를 지셨기에 우리에게 생명이 주어졌습니다.
그 주님이 우리에게도 각자의 십자가를 지라고 말씀하십니다. 질병, 경제적 어려움, 하는 일의 까다로움, 타고난 성격적 결함 같은 일반적인 삶의 고난은 그 자체로 십자가가 아닙니다. 십자가는 그리스도의 뜻과 진리를 따르기 위해 스스로 감수하는 대가입니다. 충분히 피하거나 타협할 수 있는 상황임에도, 하나님의 나라와 복음을 위해 기꺼이 좁은 길을 택하는 결단입니다.
십자가의 사건은 그리스도를 모르는 이들에게는 의미 없는 한 사람의 죽음일뿐입니다. 하지만 자기 십자가를 지고 그분을 따르는 이들에게 십자가는 영원과 오늘의 대화입니다. 그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 오늘 나의 삶으로 초대하는 초월적 사건입니다.
There are times when life feels exhausting and overwhelming, when we simply want to escape, when our hearts feel heavy, discouraged, and trapped. But if we plow up the field of our lives every time things become difficult, nothing will ever have the chance to grow.
Whenever I face challenges in life, I think of the cross. I think of its weight, the suffering that continued from the beginning of the road to the very end. Our Lord could barely carry His own body, yet He had to carry that heavy cross. How painful and exhausting it must have been! And yet, because He carried the cross, life was given to us.
That same Lord tells us to take up our own crosses and follow Him. Illness, financial hardship, difficult work, or even weaknesses in our personality are not, in themselves, our crosses. The cross is the cost we willingly bear in order to follow the will and truth of Christ. It is the decision to choose the narrow way for the sake of God’s kingdom and the gospel, even when we could easily avoid the difficulty or choose compromise instead.
To those who do not know Christ, the cross may appear to be nothing more than the death of one man. But to those who take up their own crosses and follow Him, the cross becomes a meeting place between eternity and today. It is a transcendent reality in which the death and resurrection of Christ are brought into the present reality of our lives.
