어떤 신학생이 시험을 보는데 이렇게 답을 썼다고 합니다: 하나님은 이모든 것을 다 알고 계십니다.”
교수님은 시험지에 이렇게 노트를 적어 주었습니다: “하나님 100점, 학생은 0점.”
입시 정보와 아이의 상태를 너무나 잘 꾀고 있는 완벽해 보이는 부모들을 보면서 좌절감에 빠진 부모님을 보며 이렇게 말해 주고 싶었습니다: 그 부모들은 100점, 그 아이들은…”
하지만 부모가 100점인 것은 의미 없습니다. 내가 잘 하는 것도 중요합니다. 그러나 내가 할 일이 아닌데 잘 해 주는 것은 그 사람을 의존적인 존재로 만드는 것입니다.
다음 세대를 세우는 일은 저들이 독립적인 존재로 설 수 있도록 격려해 주는 것입니다. 그러기 위해선 우리에게 믿음이 필요합니다. 저들을 향한 믿음, 그리고 저들을 돌보시고 이끄시는 하나님에 대한 믿음.
A seminary student was taking an exam and wrote this answer: “God knows all these things.”
The professor wrote a note on the paper: “God gets 100 points. The student gets 0.”
As I watched parents feel discouraged—seeing other parents who seem to know everything perfectly about education and their child’s situation—I wanted to say this: Those parents may get 100 points, but those children…
But it doesn’t mean much for a parent to get 100 points. It is important that I do well in what I am responsible for.
However, when I do well in things that are not mine to do, I end up making that person dependent.
Raising the next generation means encouraging them to stand as independent individuals.
And for that, we need faith— faith in them, and faith in God who cares for them and leads them.
