The Harvard happiness study—known as the Harvard Study of Adult Development—has been conducted for over 80 years and is one of the
longest-running studies of human life in the world. It followed individuals over decades, examining their health, relationships, and
happiness. Beginning in 1938, it tracked Harvard students and young men from low-income neighborhoods in Boston—and later included their children—observing entire lives across generations.
The conclusion is simple: Human happiness does not depend on what you have, but on who you have.
It is not based on relationships without conflict, but on relationships built on trust.
Good relationships make a good life. Therefore, one of the most important things to do when you are young is to build relationships you can trust.
The number of relationships is not what matters. Even with a small number of people, if those relationships are marked by trust and respect, you will become happier as you grow older.
Dear members of Lake Church, let us build relationships where we trust and honor one another, and become a community that brings joy
to each other.
“People are not made happy by what they have, but by who they have.”
