하나님은 우리와의 관계를 즐기는 분입니다. God is One who delights in a relationship with us.

우리는 모두 막연한 기대들을 갖고 살아갑니다.

우리 아이들이 모두 성공했으면, 가족들이 모두 건강했으면, 갖고 싶은 일들, 이루고 싶은 일들이 모두 이루어졌으면…

그런 우리 마음에 하나님은 종종 기대하는 것들을 투사하는 매개체로 전락합니다. 하나님은 전지전능하신 분이시니 내가 원하는 것들을 이뤄주실 수 있는 분… 그래서 나는 그 분의 마음에 들어야 한다는 생각으로 신앙생활을 할 수도 있겠지요.

하지만 우리의 믿음을 그런 수준으로 전락시키지 않았으면 좋겠습니다. 부모와 자식의 관계가 단순히 무언가를 주고 얻을 수 있는 관계로 전락되면 마음이 아플 겁니다. 반면 상대방이 누구이든 서로를 사랑하고 돌볼 수 있는 관계가 많은 사람일 수록 행복할 겁니다.

하나님은 우리와의 관계를 즐기는 분입니다. 그리고 우리에게 요구하시는 것도 마찬가지—그저 하나님을 즐기는 사람이길 바라십니다. 우리의 기대가 이루어지는 것과는 상관 없이.

We all live with vague expectations.

We hope our children will succeed, our families will be healthy, and that everything we desire and strive for will come to pass.

At times, in our hearts, God is reduced to a means through which those expectations might be fulfilled. Since God is almighty, we may think of Him as the One who can grant what we want—and so we may find ourselves living out our faith with the aim of pleasing Him in order to receive those things.

But I hope we do not allow our faith to sink to that level. If a relationship between parent and child were reduced to nothing more

than giving and receiving, it would be heartbreaking. On the other hand, those who are surrounded by people who love and care for others

selflessly are the ones who experience deeper joy in life.

God is One who delights in a relationship with us. And what He asks of us is the same—that we would be people who delight in Him, regardless of whether our expectations are fulfilled or not.
